The Income Tax Department is launching a new user-friendly ITR e-filing portal today (Monday, June 7).

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement that “the new e-filing system is focused at giving taxpayer ease and a modern, seamless experience.”

The new portal’s launch comes with several benefits for taxpayers. The Income Tax Department will offer free ITR preparation software for Forms ITR-1 and ITR-2.

“To begin with, free ITR preparation software with interactive questions is available to assist taxpayers for ITRs 1, 4 (online and offline) and ITR 2 (offline),” the finance ministry said in a statement.

It said that a facility for preparing ITRs 3, 5, 6, and 7 would be available soon.

To assist taxpayers in becoming accustomed with the redesigned website, the IT department will include thorough FAQs, user manuals, videos, and a chatbot/live agent.

The new user-friendly interface has been incorporated with the immediate processing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) in order to provide taxpayers with speedy refunds.

All conversations, uploads, and pending actions will be consolidated into a single dashboard for taxpayers to review and act on.

It will remind taxpayers of their legal obligations, encouraging them to fulfil any outstanding tasks and stay on the right side of the law.

Taxpayers can update their profile ahead of time to submit details of their income, such as salary, property ownership, and business/profession, which will be used to pre-fill their ITR.

After TDS and SFT statements are submitted, a detailed enablement of pre-filling with salary income, interest, dividends, and capital gains will be provided (due date is June 30th, 2021)

A new call centre will also be established to give timely responses to taxpayer inquiries.

Filing Income Tax Forms, among other things Incorporate tax professionals. Faceless Scrutiny or Appeals would be available to submit responses to Notices.

Following the portal’s initial introduction, a mobile application will be provided to allow taxpayers to familiarise themselves with the various capabilities.

To avoid any disruption to taxpayers, the tax payment system will be activated on June 18, 2021, after the advance tax instalment date.
